JEON BYEONG SAM: Rumination
JEON BYEONG SAM: Rumination is a large-scale media projection mapping exhibition presented during Singapore Art Week 2026, using the facade of CHIJMES—one of Singapore’s most significant historic landmarks—as its canvas. The project originates from JEON’s world flag video works first presented in 2021 at MCM Haus Museum Seoul, and has since been expanded and integrated across spatial, temporal, and conceptual dimensions.
JEON approaches the national flags of all 193 countries registered with the United Nations as some of the most powerful yet contradictory visual symbols of contemporary society. Flags condense national identity, history, and ideology into a single image, while simultaneously functioning as devices that visually fix borders, separation, and conflict. In this work, JEON dismantles the colors, proportions, and geometric structures of national flags and reconstructs them through the abstract visual language of his signature LOST series.
Each flag, billowing majestically against a blue sky, is transformed into a 10-second moving image, appearing as a large, organically shifting stripe-like abstraction. These sequences are projected sequentially in alphabetical order by country name, forming a continuous flow lasting 32 minutes and 10 seconds. While each nation initially exists as an independent unit, the ongoing projection gradually causes colors and forms to echo, overlap, and converge, eventually dissolving into a visual continuum in which individual nations become difficult to distinguish.
CHIJMES is a landmark that has passed through layers of religious, colonial, and administrative history before being recontextualized as a site for culture and the arts. By projecting the symbols of all nations onto the exterior of this historic structure, the exhibition reveals that the idea of the nation is not a fixed entity, but one that is constantly reinterpreted through history and relationships. Realized in Singapore—a country positioning itself as a hub of Southeast Asia—and on one of its most symbolic architectural sites, the work removes hierarchies and centers among nations, situating all within an equal visual flow.
Rather than delivering a definitive message, Rumination functions as a form of visual meditation, inviting viewers to think by following the movement of color and motion. The meanings of national flags are not asserted or declared; instead, they are dismantled, layered, and reconnected. Through this process, viewers are encouraged to reconsider nationhood, identity, and coexistence not as fixed definitions, but as matters of change and relationship.
The exhibition presents the contemporary world’s conditions of division and connection, borders and circulation, as a single abstract system. In doing so, Rumination quietly yet powerfully proposes an imagination beyond the nation—or an alternative way of thinking about the nation itself.
